Homura is like aparfait onion in that she has a lot of layers, and not everyone likes her in their magical girl dishes. ... shut up this analogy totally works, ok. Well the part about her being layered and her not being to everyone's taste is right, ok.
Anyway...
There are two main things you need to know to understand Homura. The first is that she has been through a hell of a lot in pursuit of a singular goal. She has gone through the same month nearly one hundred times, fighting towards this one goal every time and failing every time. She has seen many terrible things and also done terrible things, and she's become desensitized to them.
The second thing is that her primary goal has been to save the girl she considers her dearest and only friend, Madoka Kaname, from dying and from becoming a Magical Girl. There is no one and will never be anyone for whom Homura feels more strongly than Madoka.
These two things are what, more than anything, have shaped Homura into who she is today.
